RBCDSAI was established to bring a cohort of researchers together to tackle diverse challenges in big data using machine learning and artificial intelligence. From modelling the spread of Covid-19 to developing novel algorithms in deep neural networks to target and solve problems in automotive sectors, aid in the development of smart cities, we aim to improve tomorrow together. We invite exceptional undergraduates and researchers of all levels with an experience and passion for data science and artificial intelligence to join our ever-expanding team of researchers and make a positive societal impact through their research. RBCDSAI boasts of a highly qualified team of researchers and support staff. The centre is well equipped with necessary infrastructure to lay down a conducive environment for the researchers. Robert Bosch Centre for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (RBCDSAI) is a pre-eminent interdisciplinary research academic centres for Data Science and AI in India with the largest network analytics, deep reinforcement learning, and the most active natural language processing and deep learning groups. The primary mission is to develop ML and AI-based innovations to a broad range of domains, including manufacturing, infrastructure, smart cities, financial inclusion, and healthcare.
We work with central, state and local governments, industry, clinical sector, among many others, to gain transformative insights and actionable steps to make a credible impact on the relevant stakeholders.
The “Narayanan Family Foundation Fellowship in AI for Social Good” is a new program to attract early career AI researchers with exceptional promise to RBCDSAI, IIT Madras. The Fellows will be primarily drawn from recent PhD graduates, early career researchers in the following areas but not limited to: computer science, computational and data sciences, biomedical sciences, management, finance, or any branch of engineering.
Funded by The Narayanan Family Foundation, the Fellows will get a very attractive salary of 15-18 lakhs (approx. US$ 20,000 - 24,000) per year depending on the experience (equivalent to Assistant Professor’s starting salary at any IIT) for a non-renewable term of 3 years. The Fellows are also eligible for a one-time research grant of up to 30 lakhs (approx. US$ 40,000). The Fellows are expected to conduct their independent research under the mentorship of the Centre in the area of AI for Social Good and will have access to high-end compute infrastructure and datasets at RBCDSAI.
On going AI for Social Good projects at RBCDSAI
RBCDSAI collaborates with several governmental, non-governmental, health care institutions to work on many socially relevant projects. We work with The Tamil Nadu e-Governance Agency (TNeGA) to establish the Integrated and Inclusive Public Grievance CM Helpline Management System to use data science and AI techniques to locate optimally and allocate emergency ambulances in the districts and reduce road traffic accidents. In collaboration with Dvara Trust, we develop algorithms for predicting low-income households’ financial distress to draw attention to their economic well-being. Work with NGOs and clinical research institutions to improve child and maternal health and preterm risk categorisation of pregnant women. Candidates who would like to apply for research programs in RBCDSAI should enroll for the PhD / MS program under Interdisciplinary Research Programme (IDRP) at IIT Madras.. The candidates must apply via the IIT Madras website, and choose the "Data Sciences & AI" stream for applying to RBCDSAI. Applicants must be fluent in at least one high-level programming language (C/C++/MATLAB/Python). A background in mathematics is highly preferred.
This role gives candidates hands-on experience working on real time projects, led by the faculty of RBCDSAI. The applicants should have strong programming skills in either Python or R. Programming experience in relational platforms such as SQL, non-relational technologies such as Hadoop, Map Reduce, Hive, Mahout are desirable. Experience in PIG and information retrieval libraries like Lucene or Solr are an added advantage.

There are multiple ways through which industry can engage with the RBCDSAI. Industry partners can join the RBCDSAI Industry Consortium. The Consortium members get access to exclusive benefits that help them establish themselves early as key players in the Data Science and Al space, with the potential to secure new and significant revenue streams. Other ways of establishing contacts and collaborations with RBCDSAI are through industry-funded projects (including consultancy), attending many RBCDSAI events, seminars, workshops, and specific training programs. The industry can also participate in the research at RBCDSAI through joint degree programs such as TEEDE programs.
