What is the amount of stipend? What is the renewal criteria from
year 1 to 2? Does the stipend change? The initial stipend amount starts at Rs. 40,000 per month and depends on the experience and qualification of the candidate. Renewal of the fellowship depends on the performance of the candidate, which will be reviewed by a committee. What is the eligibility criteria? The candidate should have a 4 year bachelors or a masters degree in areas relevant to RBCDSAI. The candidate should be under 28 years of age as on 31st March 2024. Does this allow for hostel accommodations? Hostel accommodation is not guaranteed and is subject to availability of hostel rooms. Please note that due to covid restrictions currently hostel accommodation is not available until further notice. What about family student housing? any options for a spouse staying within campus -- if not what are non campus options and recommendations ? There are several affordable housing options available around campus, but we do not have a specific recommendation. Areas to consider include Sriram Nagar, Kotturpuram, Velachery, Adyar, Taramani, etc. How do they pick a faculty "advisor" - are all profs associated with the institute mandated to take them on as a "fellow" if they show interest in that area of research? Is the prof selected as part of the award or post award? While applying, the candidates are required to provide a choice of THREE faculty members from RBCDSAI with whom they wish to work. Based on research interests, alignment and availability, the candidate will be interviewed by the concerned faculty member and if selected, will be working with the faculty member of their choice. The fellow has the freedom to work or collaborate with other faculty members within RBCDSAI. Note that the fellowship is associated with the student and not the faculty advisor and therefore the student can choose to work under a different faculty advisor within RBCDSAI based on mutual consent. What are potential skills that I will gain during my fellowship? The fellowship basically gives you a platform to enhance your research skills. The fellows get enough time to go through the literature, understand the topics in depth, discuss with fellow researchers at the Centre and come up with innovative solutions. Exercising responsible AI practices is one of the crucial skills taught here which prepares the candidate for their success post-fellowship. Examples of how the fellowship helped with career options. Our post-bacc fellows work with a wide network of people, within and outside the campus. These collaborations help the fellows in advancing their career in the industry or in academia. Many of our alumni are currently working in top research labs or pursuing higher education in some of the top colleges of the world or were recruited by research based organizations. What is a "day in the life" of a fellow ? While a post-bacc is expected to do only research primarily, there are many activities happening at the Center that they could be a part of. Fellows can sign up and present their work at biweekly meetings, events and workshops organized by the Centre. We host many exceptional visitors with whom the fellows can interact. There are many talks, colloquia, and events that are organized by RBCDSAI, which the fellow can participate in to get to know about cutting edge research. Are there any rules about applying for a PhD while a fellow ( within IIT (s) or elsewhere)? The fellows are free to apply, and are even encouraged to apply, to a PhD program, but if the fellow decides to quit before the completion of the tenure, 1 month prior notice is required. Will the advisory professor give a Letter of Reference post fellowship? Why is that important/useful? Based on the candidate’s performance during their work period, the faculty may provide a letter of reference. A Letter of Reference from a reputed institution like IITM will add value to the candidate’s profile in their future endeavors - both in academia and industry. Will professors introduce to corporate teams for future hiring? How does that work - with timelines? A professor introducing a student to a corporate team is highly subjective. However, the fellows can present their work at the RBCDSAI annual research showcase event, depending on the outcome of their work. The event is attended by many industry practitioners. If the student’s work aligns with the company’s interest the student maybe evaluated for a potential job offer. Is this position considered an "employee" or staff of IITM - are there benefits that come with that? This position is categorized as Project Staff under a project. Each post-bacc fellow is provided with health insurance. They are also provided with library privileges inside IITM. Where can I find a list of projects based on subject matter? The list of current projects can be found in the Projects page of the RBCDSAI website. Will I get feedback about the application if I did not get the award this year? Due to the multitude of applications we receive every year, it is challenging to reply to each applicant. The applicants who are not selected for the award will only be notified about it. The candidates can go through the online courses handled by our faculty members to get a grasp on the basic concepts and skills required to get into RBCDSAI. Once offered a position, within how many days is the candidate expected to join? The candidate is expected to accept the offer immediately, and provide a joining date within 6 weeks from the date of receiving the offer letter. If selected, is the fellow required to relocate to the IITM campus, or can they work online remotely? Given the current COVID restriction, they are not required to relocate to Chennai. However, considering this is a full time position the candidate will be required to relocate once the restrictions are lifted. What is the leave policy ? What is maternity policy? Is there infrastructural support available for a pregnant/new mom? The leave policy is as per IC&SR, IITM guidelines. The fellow is eligible for 2 ½ days leave for each completed month of service. Only 50% of leave at credit as on 31ST Dec will be carried forward to the next year. Leave so carried forward will be available only up to 31st March of next year. Women project staff appointed under selection basis are eligible for maternity leave as per GoI norms subject to the following:
